What Formed From Light is

Formed From Light is a platform focused on photography, business, and the systems that connect them.

You’ll find practical guidance on:

  • Taking better photos in real life (especially when working with people)
  • Understanding how to get and work with clients
  • Building a stronger, more consistent client experience
  • Creating workflows and systems that actually support your work

Everything here is built around real-world application.

The focus isn’t just on learning something new – it’s on being able to use it.

Why this exists

Submark Graphic

Photography education often focuses on isolated pieces, but in real work, nothing exists on its own. Most photographers struggle because everything feels disconnected, unclear, or inconsistent.

Knowing / Applying

There’s a gap between what you know and what you do.

Learning / Process

There’s a gap between what you learn and how you work.

Possible / Reality

There’s a gap between what you see as possible and making it real.

Formed From Light exists to close that gap –
to make things simpler, more structured, and easier to apply
in real situations, especially while working, shooting, and interacting with people.

About Us

Hi – I’m Chris (I run the show here)…

I’ve been involved in photography since high school, starting as a creative outlet and gradually developing it into something more serious.

For the past 10+ years, I’ve worked as a professional photographer – primarily in weddings, elopements, and portrait work – running a business alongside my wife.

You can see a ton of my work around this website, as well as through my photo studio’s site – Hand and Arrow Photography.

We started that business around the time we got married ourselves.

Going through that experience – both as clients and as photographers – completely changed how we saw what photography could be. Not just creatively, but in how it fits into people’s lives and how it can become something meaningful to build around.

At the time, we were both working corporate jobs. Photography started as something on the side, then gradually became something much more central.

There have been a lot of challenges along the way, but it’s also been one of the most rewarding things we’ve built.

Alongside photography, I’ve had experience in other industries including corporate compliance and non-profit work. That broader background has shaped how I think about structure, systems, and how people actually operate in real-world environments.

By nature, I’m fairly introverted, but I’ve always enjoyed teaching and helping people navigate photography, art, and business in a way that feels more clear and manageable.

How I approach photography and business

The way I think about photography is closely tied to how I think about systems and decision-making. There are a few core ideas that shape everything you will find on this website.

Photography and business directly influence each other

The stronger one becomes, the stronger the other.

Clear systems
reduce stress and decision fatigue

Good systems create space to focus on what matters.

Practical experience matters more than perfect theory

Real-world practice builds confidence and judgment.

The goal is
consistency and clarity over time

Small, repeatable steps lead to lasting results.

It’s about making better decisions in real situations.

Photography is not separate from education-it’s an ongoing, full-time part of everything I do.

Why this matters to me

Photography has always been more than just the images.

It’s about how you experience the work, how you connect with people, and how you build something that feels sustainable over time.

A lot of what I share comes from wanting to make that process clearer and more accessible…

Not by oversimplifying it, but by helping you understand how things actually work and how to apply them in your own way.
